A long-standing traffic pinch point between Brisbane’s bayside and the Redlands is back under review, with $500,000 committed to a business case for the Tingalpa Creek Bridge on Rickertt Road.
The crossing sits on the boundary of Brisbane City and Redland City and forms part of an important connection used by motorists moving between Brisbane’s eastern bayside suburbs and the Redlands.
Redland City Council will lead the planning work, examining options to duplicate or replace the bridge and widen the constrained road approaches.
Cross-Boundary Bottleneck
The bridge has become known for peak-hour congestion, particularly where Rickertt Road narrows to a single lane on the approaches to Tingalpa Creek.
While much of the discussion around the project has focused on Redlands commuters, any major upgrade would also affect traffic movement on the Brisbane side of the boundary.
The business case will assess the single-lane section north of the creek in Brisbane as well as the southern approach within the Redlands.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the study would consider the cost-benefit of replacing or duplicating the existing bridge and upgrading both approaches.
Study Due in 2027
The Queensland Government committed $500,000 to the business case in May.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said the work was an important step toward addressing congestion at the crossing.
The study is expected to continue until mid-2027 and will establish the technical and economic information needed before a larger infrastructure project can move ahead.
Local MPs have also pointed to the need for a completed business case before seeking the substantial State and Federal funding likely to be required.
Upgrade Not Yet Funded
For now, the commitment is limited to planning.
There is no construction funding attached to the announcement, and no start date has been set for bridge duplication, replacement or road widening.
The business case will ultimately help determine which option is preferred and whether the project is strong enough to compete for future infrastructure funding.
