Michael Gannon Residence: A Beautiful Queenslander In a Seaside Suburb

Manly is home to many heritage-listed houses, but one of those that stand out is the Michael Gannon residence because it’s rare to see substantial seaside houses like this in the suburb.

Sitting on three parcels of land at 150 Kingsley Terrace, the residence is a great example of a late 19th century seaside house. It is meticulously constructed with timber, has a wide verandah, and a french-provincial entrance.

Just like a quintessential Queenslander, it is elevated well above the ground to counteract extreme conditions like flooding, high temperatures and pest infestations.

It has an under-house area, which is enclosed with a combination of timber battens, asbestos cement sheeting and concrete block work. This area serves as a garage and storage area and includes the enclosure to the original earth closet.

A central timber stair, which leads to the verandah serves as entry to the house. It still has the original front door surrounded by patterned coloured glass.

The enclosed rear verandah now serves as the main living area. The verandah also accommodates the kitchen at the northern end and the bathroom at the southern end.

One of the significant components of the residence is the billiard room which flanks the rear section of the hallway to the south.

The architect of the house was unknown but it is believed that it was designed by architects John Hall and Son who also designed Gannon’s Breakfast Creek residence and Hawthorne villa.

Who is Michael Gannon?

The residence was constructed in 1888 for Michael Brennan Gannon, and his wife Amy.

Gannon was a member of Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Toombul, Government Auctioneer and valuator (owner of Arthur Martin & Co).

He purchased a large portion of land in the Wynnum-Manly area formerly part of Portion 57. Gannon sold off a considerable acreage of land, but retained ownership of that portion on which the residence was to be constructed.

The house became his family’s holiday home. His permanent residence was at “Waratah”, Toorak Road in Breakfast Creek.

Apart from his endeavours in politics, Gannon was known for his Brisbane’s social and sporting society.

He became the vice-president of the Albert Cricket Club in 1888 and was involved with the Queensland Rifle Association, the Brisbane Bicycling Club, and the Breakfast Creek Rowing Club.

At the time of Gannon’s death in April 1898, his widow’s place of residence was listed as ‘Manly.’

Later owners continued to use the house as a seaside home. Thomas and Elizabeth Goodman bought the property in 1927 and used it as their principal place of residence. The Goodmans remained there until the death of Elizabeth in 1953.

It was vacant until 1955 when the public trustee sold it to an investor who had the house converted into three flats.

The house remained as flats until June 1999 when the property was purchased by the current owners. The residence has been identified as a character building in the Wynnum-Manly Local Area Plan.

On 27 October 2000, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register for its association to Michael Gannon and for its demonstration of Queensland’s cultural heritage.

The Michael Gannon residence is also significant in demonstrating the continued growth of the Wynnum/Manly area in the latter part of the 19th century.

This charming outskirt is hands-down one of the most interesting beachside suburbs in Brisbane. Here are some things that make Manly special:

1. It’s where you will find the largest boat harbour facility in the southern hemisphere.

Boating is popular in Manly, thanks to its well-sheltered coastal location. There are a number of boating clubs based in Manly. There’s the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club, and the Darling Point Sailing Squadron among others.

2. The first land sales occurred in 1882.

Manly was first referred to as the “Manly Beach Estate” based on the advertisements published in newspapers. It is believed that the name was inspired by Manly in Sydney. It was advertised as “The Future Premier Watering Place of Brisbane,” in an auction in 1887, a description that somehow makes sense now because rentals for detached houses in Manly was the fastest-rising rate in Brisbane for 2018.

3. You will find one of Brisbane’s earliest state schools in Manly.

The Manly State School opened in 1910. It was so popular that parents have been known to camp overnight to secure a place. One of the notable people who went to the school was ABC announcer Spencer Howson.

4. The Manly Railway Station opened in 1888.

At the time, it served as the original terminus of the line. The line was extended a year later to the original Cleveland station. It was rebuilt in 1992, which involves demolishing the original timber station infested with termites.

5. It homes the largest flotilla in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Coast Guard, a flotilla of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association, is notable for being the largest flotilla in Australia and for having the Lord Mayor of Brisbane as its patron.

Manly House Rentals Fastest-Rising In Brisbane For 2018

Rentals for detached houses in Manly was the fastest-rising rate in Brisbane for 2018, latest report says.

Data from the Domain Rental Report for December quarter 2018 showed Manly’s record increase of 14.5 per cent on year-to-year, with a median weekly rent price of $493. Ascot and South Brisbane closely followed the ranking with 14.2 per cent and 13.7 per cent year-to-year, respectively.

According to homesales.com.au, the average rental returns for detached houses for Manly is at 3.44 per cent on year-to-year. Rental units, on the other hand, have a 4.78 per cent return with a median weekly rental price of $430.

Domain’s senior analyst  Nicola Powell attributed Manly’s rental increase to its appeal for families looking to migrate from NSW, specifically Sydney, to suburbs with access to good schools for their children.

Other top performing suburbs for the fastest-rising detached house rentals include Nudgee, Tarragindi, Fairfield, Petrie Terrace, Dakabin, Banyo and East Brisbane. With rental units, Holland Park, Clontarf, Bandon, South Brisbane and Balmoral ranked among the top five.

The news comes as forecast from the Residential Property Prospects 2018-2021 report for Brisbane’s general housing market sees a modest but steady growth until 2021, while Sydney’s declines.

However, rentals in Brisbane’s inner cities continue to weaken despite the developments. Brisbane CBD’s rental units, a 35-minute drive from Manly, fell to 4 per cent year-on-year with a $480 median weekly rental price. Analysts say there is more supply than demand coming into the CBD market.

Autistic Teen Runs Own Bin Cleaning Business in Wynnum Manly Area

Clay Lewis has autism and couldn’t find an after-school job so he created one, his own bin-cleaning business.

One year ago, the eager 16-year-old offered his neighbours a free bin clean on New Year’s Day. When he did a fantastic job, his mother put the word out on Facebook and that is how Clay’s Bin Cleaning started.

Clay’s mum, Laura Lewis, wanted him to find a part-time job so he could build his resume while he was still at school. She wanted him to build his references.

Laura says that Clay has dreams of living down the Gold Coast, owning a car, finding a wife, and having his own family. These are simple, perfectly reasonable dreams for most people. But for someone who has been diagnosed with autism at the age of 2, some of those dreams may be unattainable, and the way to those dreams, getting and keeping a job, may be particularly challenging.

Finding a part-time job was tough for Clay. He managed to get a trial position at a fish-and-chip shop. However, the owner told Laura that his business could just not afford to provide the on-the-job training that the boy needed.

Today, the industrious teen does bin cleaning after school, every Monday and Tuesday. It costs $10 for Clay to clean one bin, $15 for him to tidy up two bins and then an extra $5 per bin after that.

Initially, Clay took one employee, a friend from school, to work with him. When the demand increased, two other kids were trained to be backup.

The bin cleaning business has given Clay a newfound confidence. Whilst his mom used to speak out for him, Clay is now advocating for himself. She is delighted that Clay’s business is teaching him to become more independent.

Laura believes that Clay’s story should send the message to employers to be more considerate when interviewing neurodiverse teenagers. She asserts that the limitations of people with autism spectrum disorder are set on them by others. They actually have lots of potential and the capability to spread their wings, with the proper support.

With mum Laura behind him, Clay is all set to test his wings and learn to fly.
