Peta Prestidge was appointed as president of Manly Harbour Village Chamber of Commerce when David Farley retired after 35 years. The Chamber of Commerce oversees Manly Harbour Village and ensures it stays as a world-class leisure precinct, just like how Mr Farley envisioned it more than three decades ago.

“I love Manly and the bayside area, and have immersed myself in the local community, leading to my appointment as President of the precinct’s Chamber of Commerce in late 2021,” Ms Prestidge shared.

Before she took over the role, Ms Prestidge served as the general manager of The Consortium Group since 2016. The company is behind The Arsonist and Tide on the Jetty, two of the most popular restaurants in Manly.

As the current president of Manly Harbour Village Chamber of Commerce, Ms Prestidge hopes new and existing members would get more involved, believing that working together for the bigger picture is the key to success.

Nikki Kay and her husband transformed Wilson’s Boathouse into Manly Boathouse, now one of the leading seafood restaurants in the bayside.

The Kays gave the space a brand new look with their relaxed outdoor area where guests can walk in and try their bar snack menu, and a patio featuring a fish and chippery, gelato bar, and licensed bar.

The husband and wife duo successfully owned many retail businesses since 1991, which include bulk butcher shops, seafood markets, and seafood restaurants.

They were the original owners of Reef Seafood  + Sushi, which was sold in 2018, before they opened a second venue, ReefGasworks in the Gasworks Precinct in Newstead, with the help of their son Ryan.

It started when she played and served as coach for the Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club in the lower divisions.

Cricket grew so popular because of Metcalfe’s help, which even led to the merger of Redlands and Wynnum to come up with a first grade team. Since then, the sport keeps reaching new heights in the bayside.

About the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly

Meanwhile, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is one of Queensland’s oldest and most prestigious sailing and cruising clubs. Since 1885, the organisation has supported sailing by training potential sailors on all levels.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron was Australia’s first sailing club to offer women membership in 1975, per past Commodore Bill Kirby.

“I well remember the late P/C John Hattrick meeting with P/C David Bowly and myself early in 1975 and telling us it simply wasn’t acceptable for the Squadron not to welcome Ladies into our midst and for them not to be able to take part in all facets of Club life. David was Vice Commodore at the time and I was the Rear.

“P/C John’s proposals were enthusiastically approved at a Special General Meeting of the Members and as they say, ‘The rest is history.'”

Soon after, the  Ladies’ Committee raised money for the Snack Bar and held sailing classes for kids during scholl holidays. They also established the ArtArama, an arts and crafts festival that was popular in Manly for many years.

Wynnum-Manly Primary Care Centre Goes Digital

Did you know that the Wynnum-Manly Primary Care Centre has now gone digital, with patients’ medical records now accessible electronically?

After 12 weeks of digital training, workers at the Wynnum-Manly Primary Care Centre have done their first documentation of the patients’ integrated electronic medical records (ieMR), allowing the facility to finally go live on the digital platform.

With the new ieMR, Wynnum-Manly Primary Care Centre would be able to access the patients’ records electronically, thus bridging any gaps in the delivery of their needed healthcare.

“Sometimes it can be difficult accessing our patients’ medical information as a small community site,” Nurse Unit Manager Eric Ford said. “Having immediate access to electronic patient medical records will now be a great support for when a patient presents at the facility.”

The ieMR has been customised for Wynnum-Manly Primary Care Centre patients and whilst it was not an easy transition, the workers have welcomed the changes.

Project Manager Karen Davies and the staff have been actively involved with the customisation, collaborating with the Project Team and Cerner, the software developers.

“It’s great to see Wynnum-Manly PCC join the clinical community of Digital Hospitals in Metro South Health and across the state,” Ms Davies said.

“Clinicians will have access to instant, real-time patient information from across Metro South, as well as from digital facilities around Queensland with each patient’s electronic record now travelling with them.

“That means no need to obtain charts from Medical Records and better collaboration between clinicians, and more linked-up care for patients.

“Clinicians also have access to early warning alerts in a medical emergency and improved patient safety with patients accurately identified through wristbands with unique barcodes.”

Annual Manly Halloween Parade Moves to Wynnum

For more than 25 years, Bayside locals have been looking forward to the annual Manly Halloween Parade but the festival has been called off due to the pandemic restrictions in the last two years and it’s still the case for the third year, post-pandemic, as the organisers have chosen not to do the parade for 2022.

Former Manly Harbour Village president, David Farley, who has been the head organiser of the Halloween street party, said that they have decided since February to defer the parade as COVID-19 remains uncertain despite the loosening restrictions.

Instead, Wynnum will be taking over and hosting their inaugural Ampol Wynnum Halloween Parade on 29 October 2022 along Bay Terrace. It is expected to be smaller than the Manly event, which attracted over 20,000 people during the 2019 Halloween party.

The Wynnum festivities, organised by Wynnum Commerce with the help of Council and local businesses, will likely have over 5,000 guests. The celebration will run from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be no fireworks as well but the group said it will still be a fun community event for the locals.

Here’s what the guests can look forward to at the Wynnum event

  • Market stalls are open from 4:00 p.m.
  • Yummy food from our local vendors & Food Trucks from 5:00 p.m.
  • Trick & Treat Trail in Wynnum Central from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Parade starts at 6:00 p.m. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to dress in costumes to win in the Best Dressed Competitions.
  • Street Entertainment from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Wynnum Commerce group said they have an agreement to host the Halloween party for the next three years.

Meanwhile, Mr Farley said that he doesn’t know if Manly will resume hosting a Halloween festival by 2023 or 2024.

Manly West Mum Shares Life-Saving Experience with Royal Flying Doctor Service

Marlene Antonovich, a mum from Manly West, once experienced first-hand the life-saving care provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Recently, the RFDS held an aircraft simulator showcase at Woolworths Manly West, where she currently works, and the grateful mum is pleased and proud to share her experience with everyone,

Marlene had some complications and developed HELLP syndrome in the 34th week of her pregnancy. This life-threatening condition, which refers to Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets, is a variant of preeclampsia. This meant that mum and baby were at risk of losing their lives unless they get medical attention right away.

At that time, the mother was still living in the port city of Bunbury in Western Australia with no access to a neo-natal unit. However, RFDS was able to help with her transfer to a specialised facility in Perth, where she was able to safely deliver her daughter.

On the RFDS flight, Marlene feared for her baby’s life but was comforted by the experienced team on board. “The nurse was really reassuring, she said ‘it’s ok, it’s just the medication,’” Marlene said. “The nurse made eye contact during the flight which was really good – just a look was enough to say that I was going to be okay.”

Today, Marlene’s daughter is all grown up and has been enjoying her life in Brisbane. She is also greatful that Woolsworth has initiated a fundraiser to support RFDS, as this will give families like Marlene’s better access to healthcare services across the country.

What is the RFDS?

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has been around for more than 90 years to help people in rural and remote areas. Reverend John Flynn established the initiative in 1928 to grow into the world’s largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisation.

RFDS provides 24-hour aeromedical emergency services that can reach anywhere, no matter how remote, within hours. They also offer telehealth consultations, fly-in fly-out GP and Nurse clinics, mobile dental services, patient transfers, and other health services.

The organisation has nearly 2,200 staff and volunteers. While RFDS receives government support, they also rely on private donations that go to purchasing and upgrading medical supplies and equipment, as well as maintenance and replacement of the air ambulance services.

In early June, the RFDS brought their flight simulator to Woolworths Manly West at the corner of Manly And Hargreaves roads as part of the donation drive.

Manly and Manly West Kerbside Collection: Upcycling Ideas to Repurpose Trash into Unique Pieces

Heads up, Manly and Manly West! It’s your turn for kerbside collection soon! Did you know that you can repurpose a lot of items to give them a new lease on life? Here are some ideas before you think of chucking them on the kerb.

There’s still plenty of time to sort through your old and items for disposal and re-check if your kerbside collection pile includes unacceptable items that will not be picked up. Some of your items might also be more useful as donations to various charities or the Council’s treasure troves to reduce the landfill wastes.

Better yet, instead of throwing some things away, consider upcycling old furniture and start on a beautification project at home!

For instance, old dressers or even old washing machine drums could become great display cases for plants. You’ll need to spend on some good paint brands and brushes to give these items new life.

Need new light fixtures? No need to head out to the store to buy a brand new piece. Look at your existing stuff and repurpose these into unique lanterns or lampshades. You could also repurpose old light fixtures for other uses — the possibilities are endless when you upcycle!

Got plenty of old pictures to sort through? Framing each of these might cost a lot of money but you could save a lot if you upcycle and use old window frames to display these beautiful images.

You don’t even have to put them on the wall. You can also upcycle old picture frames as tables and fill these with your family’s memories.

If your old luggage has been sitting under dust for the last few years, it could still be of use as shelves on empty walls in your house.

Don’t be afraid to try fun and bold colours since the very idea for upcycling is to never constrain your creativity. If you make mistakes, then it’s all part of the learning process. However, it’s always a good idea to prepare the right tools, plan ahead, and then give the old pieces a good rundown first before you start on the project.

Look at YouTube videos for some ideas and instructions on how to carry out this project and ask family members to help you complete it as this will make for a great bonding activity during the weekends.

Construction Of 191 Stratton In Manly To Be Delayed

Construction works on a four-storey residential development at 191 Stratton Tce, Manly have been paused and the project will likely be delayed until issues are resolved.

The 43-unit residential development, which is a project of DeMartini Fletcher, is due for completion by the end of 2022. However, it may not be open until December 2023 after the pandemic impacted the costing and availability of supplies for construction.

DeMartini Fletcher revealed they needed to discontinue the works to regroup and solve the issues following the dramatic increase of prices in building supplies such as steel and aluminum. Prices increased by the second half of 2021 due to the supply chain disruptions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The CBD-based developer admitted that the huge increase in supply costs had a big impact on projects like 191 Stratton, and that it would increase the total project cost by almost 35 percent. The estimated cost of the project is already around $25 million.

Once the costing issues are resolved, works at the site will likely resume by the second quarter of 2022 for a 15-month construction process. They have only done some site preparations and no major works have been started so far.

Prior to the issues the developers are currently facing, works have been delayed following issues with some locals, but the developer agreed to tweak certain elements of the designs and lower the number of units and retail space.

The developer has already held the sold-turning ceremony for the residential project in November 2021 in partnership with Rork Projects. The proceedings were hosted by Demartini Fletchers Development Manager, Tony Dwyer with the official sod turning being undertaken by the Managing directors of both companies, John DeMartini Senior and Brian O’Rourke.

191 Stratton’s amenities include a resort-style pool, BBQ area and wellness gym. A rooftop recreation deck boasting stunning bay views is also available for all residents.

DeMartini Fletcher is behind some of well-known residential projects in Brisbane, including Enclave Wynnum and V Clayfield.

New Childcare Centre In Manly To Start Construction Soon

The construction of a new childcare centre in Manly is going ahead in February 2022, to meet the demand for long day care in the bayside.

Long day care is a centre-based form of childcare service that typically provides all day care for children of working families. Long day care centres may be run by private operators, not-for-profit organisations, employers and community groups.

The 108-place childcare centre will cater to children ages 0-5 years old. It will feature two storeys with outdoor play and sleeping areas.

Located at 18-22 Ernest St, Manly, the project is estimated to cost around $10 million and is one of four new childcare projects on the bayside.

It’s located close to the upcoming 86-place Treehouse Early Learning Manly at 70 – 74 Ernest St and close to local services such as Manly Harbour Village and Wynnum Health Service in Manly West. It’s also within walking distance of Manly State School and Manly Train Station.

Echelon Property Group, who’s also behind the childcare centre along Stradbroke Avenue Wynnum, believe that despite the new childcare venues popping up around the bayside, there’s definitely no oversupply of centres in the area.

As of October 2020, which was the time the applicant made an assessment report for the development application, it was mentioned that there were five long day care centres in the major catchment supplying a total of 340 places to an estimated resident market of 1,375 children under 5.

Read: Stratton Terrace Development to Bring New Dining or Lifestyle Amenities to Manly

“There is only one centre in Manly, however, it should be noted that this centre (Treehouse Manly) is an upcoming centre that is still awaiting service approval and is accepting enrolments to a waiting list,” the need analysis says.

The applicant said they also addressed some of the concerns that residents cited, including the potential traffic problems it might bring to an already busy part of Manly.

“With locally generated demand exceeding supply and additional demand from non-resident workers, it’s estimated that Manly has a supply restriction and would benefit from the development of a childcare centre at the subject site,” the planning document reads.

Depending on weather and construction conditions, the childcare centre will start operating by early 2023. It’s expected to bring in up to 30 jobs throughout the construction process.

The management is also planning to hire around 30 staff once the venue opens. Once open, it will operate from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.

For more information about the approved childcare centre, see A005594986.
